Road Trip Excitement: Mastering the Art of Travel Bingo

Embarking on a road trip with kids doesn’t have to be just about reaching the destination; it can be an adventure in itself. One surefire way to inject fun and enthusiasm into the journey is by playing the classic game of Travel Bingo. Simple, interactive, and suitable for all ages, Travel Bingo turns the passing scenery into a thrilling scavenger hunt for the whole family.

Setting the Stage: Creating Travel Bingo Cards

The first step in this exciting road trip game is crafting personalized Travel Bingo cards. Sit down with the little travellers and brainstorm a list of items commonly spotted during a journey. From cows grazing in fields to bustling gas stations and the ever-ubiquitous blue car, the possibilities are as diverse as the roadside landscape itself.

Next, transform these items into a bingo grid. Ensuring each card has a unique combination. For a more personalized touch, let each child participate in the creation of their own card. This not only adds an element of creativity.  Also sparks their anticipation for the upcoming adventure.

Game On: Spotting and Marking Off Items

Armed with their specially crafted bingo cards.  Young adventurers eagerly peer out of the car windows, scanning the passing world for the items on their lists. The thrill of spotting a red barn or a license plate from a far-off state becomes a moment of triumph.

To keep the excitement alive, consider introducing a competitive element by rewarding the first player to complete a row or the entire card. Small prizes or the coveted title of “Road Trip Bingo Champion” can add an extra layer of motivation.

As the miles roll on, the Travel Trivia game transforms into fun and a car into an educational haven. This proves that learning can be an adventure, even on the open road.

So, buckle up and dive into the Travel Bingo Championship with your young travel companions. Make it a journey filled with laughter, knowledge, and the joy of exploration.

Travel Trivia Delight: Turning Road Trips into Learning Adventures

Embarking on a family road trip presents the perfect opportunity to infuse education with entertainment, and one engaging way to achieve this is through the exciting game of “Travel Trivia.” Whether you’re headed to a specific destination or just exploring the open road, this game adds a delightful layer of knowledge-sharing to your journey.

Imagine the scene: the car is cruising along. Eager minds are buzzing with anticipation. Instead of the typical, “Are we there yet?” scenario, you introduce a round of travel trivia. The rules are simple. You take turns asking and answering questions related to the destination or general knowledge. It’s a game that tests knowledge and transforms the car into a dynamic learning space. Travel Trivia Delight: Turning road trips into Learning adventures.

For instance, you might ask, “What famous landmark are we headed to, known for its iconic tower?” The correct answer, of course, is the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Alternatively, you could delve into general knowledge with questions like, “What is the capital city of Australia?” The joy of discovery and friendly competition ensues as family members try to outwit each other with their knowledge.

The Travel Trivia game makes the journey more enjoyable. It also imparts valuable information about the destination or the world at large. Parents can tailor questions to suit the age and interests of their children, making the trivia session both accessible and educational.

As the road unfolds before you, Travel Trivia becomes a shared adventure of learning. Lots of laughter, and friendly rivalry. So, pack your curiosity alongside your luggage, and let the road trip become a voyage of discovery. One trivia question at a time. After all, learning is not confined to classrooms. It can happen anywhere, even in the cozy confines of a family car hurtling down the highway.

As the miles roll on, the Travel Trivia game transforms into fun and a car into an educational haven. This proves that learning can be an adventure, even on the open road.

So, buckle up and dive into the alphabetically-ordered world of animals with your young travel companions. Make it a journey filled with laughter, knowledge, and the joy of exploration.

dice games
Dec26

Whether you are traveling in December for holiday festivities or just some pre-New Years relaxation, you might be looking for things to do indoors when the temperature drops. Here are 3 easy dice games that you can do with minimal prep (super easy to pack, too).

1. Knock Out

This dice game only requires 2 dice and involves adding up to the number 10, making it great for younger kids to play, too. Each player first chooses their “knockout number” between either 6, 7, 8, or 9. Two players CAN pick the same number.

Decide who goes first by each rolling a die with the person who rolls the highest taking their turn first, second highest goes second, and so on. On their turn, a player must roll two dice. If they land on their chosen “knock out” number, then they are disqualified from rolling until everyone has been knocked out and the next round starts.

Every roll (EXCEPT the knock out number) contributes to the player’s overall score. Players race to a score of 100, or whatever goal your group decides on.

2. Catch Up

This dice game is great for a larger group, as it requires between 4-8 players. You will need 2 dice as well as an assortment of counters, which can be anything from bits of paper to coins, etc. The first player to obtain 3 tokens wins.

Give the dice to the oldest and youngest players (or however else you want to divide it up). Both will roll their dice at the same time and anyone who lands on a 6 must pass their dice to the right. The goal is to be the one person holding both dice. Then, you earn a counter and the process starts again.

Between each dice roll, there is a chant (mainly to give those without the dice something to do), which you can customize to your group. Use an assortment of clapping or knee-slapping to emphasize every other word to make it more exciting. We like to use the “We Will Rock You” chant, changing up the second repetition to announce the dice roll, as such: We will, we will, rock you. We will, we will, ROLL NOW!

3. Run For It

You will need 6 dice to play this and any amount of players is fine, though it tends to work best with 4-5 for time’s sake. Players will take turns rolling all 6 dice and trying to make “straight”, that is: a series of numbers that progress in counting order. For example: 1, 2, 3, and 4 OR 5, 6, and 7.

A “straight” can encompass anywhere from 2 to 6 numbers and each dice in the sequence gives the player 10 points. So 1, 2, 3, 4 would be worth 40 points in total. You can only make ONE straight per roll, so players should pick the one that gives them the most points.

Whoever reaches 500 points wins. You can raise or lower that number depending on how long you want to play.

Bonus: Want something even simpler? Check out these dice games that require only a single die!

Have Fun and Roll Away

Whatever dice games you decide to play, be sure to enjoy the time spent with your loved ones this holiday season. Play games, enjoy the snow, and celebrate the holidays together.

christmas crafts
Dec11

Winter holiday travel will be filled with Christmas markets, building snowmen, and ice skating…but sometimes you just want to stay warm indoors! Whatever the reason for staying in, your family night together needn’t be uneventful. Here are some family-friendly Christmas crafts to keep everyone entertained.

  1. Paper Plate Santa Clause

This craft is great because minimal supplies are needed. Also, the resulting product is flat and easy to pack in a bag or suitcase to take home after your holiday trip. The main supplies are a paper plate, construction paper, googly eyes, and paint or markers. However, you can modify the list to customize the experience: try pipe cleaners, pom poms, stickers, or glitter (if you dare!).

How to make it.

  1. Pinecone Christmas Tree

Turn a simple pinecone from your walks and hikes in the area into seasonal souvenirs! Use a bit of paint and whatever supplies you want to use for a star (construction paper, wood cut-outs, etc.). Kids will love exploring outdoors to find their “perfect pinecone.” Plus, the craft is minimalist if you need to buy supplies: just a few paint colours and brushes will do! You can leave them as stand-alone decorations or attach a hook or thread loop to them and turn them into tree hangings.

How to make it.

  1. Paper Snowflake Cut-Outs

Ah, a classic! The best part of this craft is that you can print out patterns at home and easily pack them along to have an easy, on-the-go craft ready for any occasion. Patterns range from ridiculously simple to quite challenging and precise. That means there is a design out there for any age range to enjoy. You can also fold the paper and “freestyle” a design to see what you can come up with from scratch.

How to make it.

  1. Popsicle Stick Ornaments

A simple pack of popsicle sticks and a few odds-and-ends to decorate with can go a long way. This can also be a multi-night craft, as there are plenty of patterns to make: reindeer, gingerbread, penguin, holiday tree, snowman, and anything else you can dare to imagine! Use buttons, markers, pipe cleaner, pom poms, felt, construction paper, and ribbon to decorate to your hearts’ content.

How to make it.

The best part about the above Christmas crafts is that many of them use similar materials so you can buy bulk supplies and mix and match projects on different nights of your winter vacation. Plus, you can have fun exploring the local shops to find supplies!

Packing tips
Oct03

Who doesn’t love a peaceful winter weekend vacation away from home? Or, you probably have plans to travel for holidays coming up: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and so on. If you are traveling to the Kelowna area or Vancouver Island, be sure to check out our vacation homes.

Pack More Socks than you Think You Need.

It’s cold out…but not always. Fall tends to flip-flop between balmy sunny days and chilly winter storms. That means a lot of moisture and mush on the streets, sidewalks, and in the parks. That means you might have to swap out soggy socks mid-day for a fresh pair. Not to mention that on the chilliest of days, you might want to wear two pairs in your boots, particularly if you like autumn hiking.

Pack Waterproof Footwear.

To prevent the above scenario, you could also just make sure to pack shoes or boots that prevent slush and moisture from leaking in. They should be something you can see yourself wearing on a warm day as well as a cooler one, as fall tends to flip-flop. One of the best packing tips is to bring appropriate footwear for your destination.

Pack a Portable Battery Charger.

Autumn can be warm at times but don’t let that deceive you. Getting stuck somewhere when the sun goes down will be unpleasant, even on the warmest days. You should always have a charged phone in case you need to call a friend or a cab if you get stranded or need a ride. That’s why packing a portable charger is a good idea, especially if you are on your phone a lot or it has an older battery that is prone to dying.

Pack a Neutral Scarf.

Scarves take up a lot of room in a bag and can be uncomfortable to wear if you are too warm. You probably won’t want to haul around more than one so make sure you pick one in a neutral colour like black, brown, beige, or grey that goes with everything and anything you might be wearing.

Pack a Tablet or Smart Reader.

Fall weather can be unpredictable. You might get anything from rain or hail or sun or snow. If there are days that you can’t go outside, you’ll want enough entertainment to get you by. A smart reader is a great way to pack every book you’ve been meaning to read without taking up much space in an overnight bag.

Pack Sunscreen.

You may be bundled from head-to-toe on a chilly day but that doesn’t mean the sun can’t reach delicate areas like your face, neck, and hands. Even on overcast days, the UV rays can get through, and sometimes clouds even amplify their strength. This is important if you’re skiing or snowboarding, too, to avoid picking up a goggle tan.

Bonus tip: Are you struggling to get your packing list together? Try a packing app! There are plenty of travel-based apps meant o simplify your vacation for you.
