Originally constructed as a simple fruit stand off of the Alberni Highway is 1973 to a now bustling little roadside stop for travellers commuting up and down the island Coombs Old Country Market is a must visit for anyone passing by or staying in the Qualicum area. Perhaps you have had the enjoyment of witnessing the ever so popular goats on the roof grazing atop the grass covered peaks or maybe this is something you have only ever heard of, either way the experience is always just as exciting each and every time.

Over the years Coombs Old Country Market has grown organically into what it is today, a booming seasonal town full of local produce, baked goods, shops, and so much more. Stroll through the main market and enjoy looking at the display of fun little knick-knacks or follow the trailing smell of fresh baked bread made in house daily and still warm if you get there early enough.

If it is a tasty treat you are looking for you don’t have to go far to find it. Meander a couple steps past the markets main entrance and arrive upon Billy G’s Donut Shop, enjoy classic flavours like Honey Dip and Old Fashioned. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous flavours like their Gimme S’more donut filled with marsh mellow and dipped in chocolate or the Billy Gruff Bomber, a caramel filled donut with bacon bits on top and are definite must try’s! The Billy Griff Creamery is located directly across the street and offers over 60 flavours of ice-cream and over 30 flavours of home-made gelato and sorbetto, so there will always be something for everyone.

After filling up on sweets what better way to work it off than to walk around and check out all the cute local shops along the way. Zolena Boutique is full of beautiful textiles, hand crafted soaps and décor, perfect for gifts or spicing up your home. Wabi Sabi Boardware offers a wide selection of West Coast attire. Popular among the young at heart this shop has great staple clothing items with a laid-back vibe. In addition to clothing and interior design items there are also lovely garden shops full of plants and outdoor decorations. Whether you are looking to buy or just enjoy some browsing there are lots of things that are enjoyable to look at.

A full day at Coombs is never complete without enjoying a bite to eat at the stunning Cuckoo Trattoria and Pizzeria. With a loaded two-page menu the options seem endless. Amazing lunch options include sandwiches like their delicious meatball sub or the Focaccia consisting of dijon mayo, lettuce, tomato & grilled chicken breast, topped with mozzarella cheese. Indulge in one of their generous servings of pasta with choices like their baked Lasagna, Salmon Fettuccine, and Gnocchi Four Cheese. Check out Pender Island’s Farmers’ Market!

 

On Saturdays from 9.30 am to 1.00pm.  Generally from Easter to Thanksgiving, though a smaller market with less vendors does continue throughout the fall and winter.  The Farmer’s Market takes place at the Pender Islands Recreation and Agricultural Hall.  Taste the flavours of the island when you attend.  Expect to see local craftsmen and farmers, vying for your attention with offering of fresh vegetables, flowers, cheese, eggs, baked goods, condiments, arts and everything else!
